Man Spends 36 Years Carving into Mountainside to Bring Water to His Village

How far are you willing to go for something you believe in? In the case of one Chinese man, no length was too far - as he just spent 36 years on a dream project for which he was regularly scorned.

Today, though, at the age of 82, his project is complete - and his village appropriately recognizes him as a hero.

That project? A 10 kilometer, hand-carved irrigation channel cut into the side of the mountains above his village of Caowangba, in China's Guizhou Province.

When Huang Dafa began his project, locals sneered and called him foolish. Now they compare him to the legendary Yu Gong.

Dafa's first attempt failed, so he went to engineering school to gather the knowledge he needed to successfully complete the project. When he returned, he knew what he needed to do, and with the help of other villagers, put his plan into action.

The work was arduous, and often required workers lower themselves from high cliffs to chip into the rock face. They often slept in high mountain caves.

The irrigation channel, now complete, supplies the 1200 people in his village with water, as well as three other villages near the channel. As part of his success, the village now has electricity, as well as a new road.

All because he believed in his dream, all the way back in 1959.
